(Women in their 20’s)

  • I don’t worry so much about it. I would not like to overreact to it.
  • I’m afraid that we cannot distinguish what is radiation contaminated food and what is not. I’m embarrassed to say that I didn’t think contaminated food would come to Tokyo. I didn’t think too deeply about it.
  • I prefer to live as I did before and contribute to the economy even if just a bit than to see people hit hard by rumors increasing.
  • I think food in the supermarket may be safe for adults but not so safe for children.
  • I heard that we are always exposed to radiation from nature and that radiation from food doesn’t stay in the human body so I don’t think much about it. However, I want to know how dangerous they are to our body.
  • Because it is not visible, I don’t have an actual feeling on the subject.
  • I very concerned about sea foods because large amounts of radioactive material were poured into the sea.
  • I buy food according to reports on the situation although I think we should not be too sensitive on the subject. I still drink tap water but I’m not sure it is as safe as it is reported.
  • As my parents are farmers, I feel pain when I see vegetables being thrown away. I buy vegetables especially from Ibaragi prefecture because they are inexpensive.
  • I think people buying up bottles of mineral water after having seen the news are too sensitive.
  • I’m not going to take action even if I get sick (from radiation contamination) from eating food in the future. I will eat without caring.

(Women in their 30’s)

  • I don’t want to overreact to concerns to radiation poisoning because we don’t understand how much it adversely effects our body, for example, what kind of symptoms are there. People already eat agro-chemical poisoned vegetables from China, inhale secondhand smoke and so on as well.
  • I trust our government and have kept on buying foods as usual though I get a little worried.
  • I have gnawing doubts in regards to information about radiation because I don’t know if they reveal the all the facts or not.
  • I don’t mind that. I often eat out. How can I know where all the ingredients are from?
  • I really feel that so many people especially the middle aged are buying up or stopping to buy because they don’t understand that the recent radiation poisoning is just temporary and it is not for years to come. I think we should buy alternative things till the level of radiation goes down.
  • Though I have some concern, being hypersensitive is not good.
  • Even though I wanted to contribute to the recover of the economy in the northern part of Japan by buying food from that area, honestly I hesitated to buy ones from there. So, I remitted relief money to them instead.
  • It is too pessimistic I think to be thinking about the earthquake, the tsunami, atomic-power accident and radiation poisoning as well.
  • I think poisoned foods are regulated in the market, so I don’t mind to buy them.
  • I feel sorry for farmers in the northern part of Japan being hit by harmful rumors and stories.
  • I’m trying to be calm and to act calmly because people are too nervous as a result of false reports.
  • I can’t help avoiding buying foods from the northern part of Japan.
  • I heard the poisoned foods don’t do harm to our body right now but I want to know when poisoned foods will do harm to our body. I want to know very well how much we need to be careful with baby. I wonder why each expert has different opinion.
  • I think foods in the market may be safe because they are regulated.
  • It is difficult to believe completely that foods in the market are safe, so I go easy on buying foods from Ibaragi and Fukushima prefecture (whilst thinking it is not good for the people and economy there) because I want to have my baby in future.
  • I doubt that our government is not manipulating information about radiation level of foods, so I’m scared of it.
  • Is water for drinking safe? Is rainwater safe? I’m consumed with worry about how we can live safe in future.
  • I don’t mind food even from the northern area of Japan.

(Women in their 40’s)

  • I have some concern but I also think foods at the shops are safe, so I buy them.
  • I buy food paying attention to where it comes from, paying attention to information about the place of production and wonder if it is true. Recently I have changed my thoughts about whether buying food in shops is safe.
  • I’m scared because the information is vague, though I think it is not good to trust rumors.
  • I worry a lit bit about it but I believe that food in the market is safe. I really feel sympathy to the farmers who were hit hard by rumors.
  • All my relatives and friends in the northern part of Japan survived but I am concerned for their future. I think food at the super market is OK and I don’t mind where it is from even though radiation poisoning is invisible. We should greatly increase our domestic consumption in order to help the economy, which was damaged by sharply decreasing exports. I really hope all things recover soon and would very much like to buy vegetables and seafood.
  • I worry when we can start to live normally again as we did before the earthquake.
  • I don’t want to eat foods from the northern part of Japan if possible.
  • I feel highly anxious about the risk to children’s body in future.

(Women in their 50’s)

  • I think to accept rumor easily is not good but I’m scared because radiation is invisible. I would like to buy things from the earthquake stricken area even though they are a bit expensive, on the other hand I still have doubt regarding the safety of food from there and I refrain on buying them at the moment. I don’t want people to take advantage of people’s weakness in the earthquake stricken area.
  • I’m trying not to be too nervous about it.

(Male Child)

  • I don’t buy rice from Fukushima just to be safe.

(Men in their 20’s)

  • I’m still scared to drink tap water, so I’m going to buy water.
  • I have concern about it but I’m trying not to accept rumors.

(Men in their 30’s)

  • I worry about the effect on Tokyo metropolitan life.
  • I don’t buy any food from any of the exposed regions because the safety of the food has not been confirmed yet and how to understand each radiation materials and figures about level of radiation (some figures about level of radiation were corrected recently) has not been defined yet. (I can’t trust government information about food from the relevant exposed regions.)
  • I worry about the price rising of meat, seafood and vegetables.
  • It is said that most of the food will be OK for your body unless you keep on eating them for a long time. As I think it will take long time to solve the problems of Fukushima nuclear power station, I’m trying not to insist on it because there are other many concerns about food, for example, food additive, agrochemical, food hygiene when you eat out, and so on. If you worry about it too much there will be no food to eat at all.
  • There is clear standard for dangerous foods, so I don’t worry about vegetables.
  • The government doesn’t work for people. They are just disguising fact and adjusting standards.
  • Honestly, I have a little concern about it. I’m confused about very cheaply priced vegetables from Ibaragi prefecture.
  • I have a little concern about it, and basically I believe that food in the market is safe. I would like farmers and makers to provide their added-value products to us on the basis of commitment that they provide only safe foods.

(Men in their 40’s)

  • I will buy when the safety of food is confirmed.
  • I was confused with the many rumors and the vague news. I want to know the truth so as to understand.
  • I think I understand that vegetables from Ibaragi prefecture, for example, at the supermarket are safe, but I avoid buying them.
  • I’m scared of radiation but it doesn’t have to do with my private life, so I don’t have any actual feeling on the matter.
  • I’m trying not to buy vegetables from Miyagi and Fukushima prefecture even though they are inexpensive. Because of ignorance about radiation level, I have to be careful about that.
  • I buy foods at the shop which I can trust. But also I go easy on buying foods according to news concerning nuclear power station accident.
  • I think people are overreacting.

(Men in their 50’s)

  • I don’t have any concern about food in the market. I think that even though people eat radiation poisoned food from time to time, it will not be a serious problem. The total amount of radiation over time is the problem finally.
